Faculty Teaching Learning Center

A Resource for LCCC Faculty

Our Mission

The mission of the Teaching Learning Center is to foster a learning-centered environment at LCCC. Outstanding instruction and student learning is an on-going process which needs continuous improvement, and the Center will be responsive to the needs of the faculty by providing opportunities which stimulate excellence in teaching and student learning.

Our Philosophical Assumptions

All faculty have a desire to engage in professional development. Each individual is in charge of that process.

Faculty development opportunities will come from many places and in many forms.

Lasting changes in teaching happen best in long-term and non-evaluative, peer coaching settings.

Just as many factors affect student learning, faculty development and a person's ability to implement change is dependent on the totality of that person's experience.

To teach in a manner that respects and cares for the souls of our students is essential if we are to provide the necessary conditions where learning can most deeply and intimately begin.”
Bell Hooks, Teaching to Transgress

LCCC is currently going through a reaccreditation Self Study. As part of that process, we want to involve the community in a discussion about the philosophy behind general education as well as the program of general education we have in place at LCCC. We have set up a blog to facilitate this discussion. Please logon to http://lcccMSCHEdiscussion.blogspot.com and add your thoughts.

“Whereas some professors might see their job as teaching the facts, concepts, and procedures of their subject, the teachers we studied emphasized the pursuit of answers to important questions and often encouraged students to use the methodologies, assumptions, and concepts from a variety of fields to solve complex problems. They often incorporated literature from other fields into their teaching and emphasized what it means to get an education. They spoke about the value of an integrated education rather than one fragmented between individual courses” (pp. 45-46).
